About Matthew R. Orr
Matt is a highly sought-after, seasoned litigator with a proven track record of success defending many of the nation’s leading retailers and manufacturers of food, beverage, dietary supplement, and cosmetic products. Particularly known for his extensive experience in consumer class actions, Matt has successfully defended clients in matters arising under California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL), Proposition 65, the Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CLRA), the False Advertising Act, Wire Tapping Statutes, Slack-Fill statutes, the Unruh Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), California’s Gift Card Laws, and the Song-Beverly Credit Card Act, among others.
Clients faced with the prospect of protracted litigation rely on Matt’s creativity and advocacy to prevail at the earliest stage of the litigation process. Matt has obtained impressive results at every stage of litigation: defeating preliminary injunctions on behalf of a well-known beverage company, obtaining dismissals with prejudice at the pleading stage on behalf of national retailers and supplement manufacturers, repeatedly defeating class certification, prevailing in federal bench and jury trials, and obtaining landmark state and federal appellate opinions that have shaped the landscape of class action jurisdiction to the benefit of manufacturers and retailers across the country.
After cutting his teeth on project finance with ‘biglaw’ for several years, Matt spent 18 years at a leading, California-based boutique law firm, where he was introduced, and ultimately decided to dedicate his practice to the food, dietary supplement, and cosmetic industries. He regularly represented companies facing consumer class actions, investigations and enforcement actions brought by state and federal enforcement agencies (including state attorneys general), mass and class privacy claims, and trademark and trade dress claims.
Matt recognizes that his most valuable role as an attorney is as an effective and efficient solver of problems – and while they may be very complex, legal disputes are, at base, simply problems to be solved. Some problems require tenacious litigation through trial, while others might call for deft negotiation and a creative end-game strategy designed to appeal to client and adversary alike. Clients rely on Matt’s unique ability to efficiently separate legal wheat from chaff, recommend solutions based on risks, costs, and benefits, and execute a litigation strategy to efficiently achieve the desired solution.
In his (little) spare time, Matt enjoys reading and spending time with his wife and four children. His hobbies include travel, golf, snowboarding, and triathlon.
